We’re proud to unveil our latest project: the debut of The Lunch Lady, the beloved Vancouver restaurant now open at 93 Ossington Avenue. Inspired by the layered vibrancy of Vietnam’s urban culture, our design approach centers on authenticity and storytelling – bringing the dynamic energy of Vietnamese street life indoors.
From the outset, we sought to capture the lived-in richness of Vietnam’s alleyways – places where everyday life spills out into the streets, animated by hand-painted signage, accordion gates, layered textures, and lush greenery. To evoke this, we introduced custom iron gates and archways, bespoke lighting installations, hand painted signage, and awnings that together reflect the eclectic, expressive charm of Southeast Asian streetscapes.
The material palette is thoughtfully curated – tactile, honest, and warm. Each element contributes to the narrative, from hand-painted concrete floors inspired by Hanoi’s stamped sidewalks, to a suspended canopy in one of the private dining rooms, modeled after the traditional cyclo bicycle taxi.
At the bar, the back wall and gantry take cues from vernacular Vietnamese architecture, blending utility with subtle ornamentation all while washing the space with a golden glow. A commissioned artwork on mirrors in the chef’s tasting room offers a window into Vietnam, capturing fleeting snapshots of its vibrant culture.
Our goal was to design more than a restaurant – we wanted to build a cultural experience rooted in memory, movement, and materiality. Lunch Lady Toronto is a tribute to Vietnam, reimagined for the heart of downtown Toronto.
